Epiphany 4, 10:00 a.m.
January 29, 2012
This Sunday’s readings are Deuteronomy 18:15-20, Psalm 95, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, and Mark 1:21-28. In the Old Testament reading, Moses gives instructions regarding prophets in the community. The passage from 1 Corinthians has an explanation of whether or not is right to eat meat sacrificed to idols. It should be considered, however, as a springboard for a conversation on ethical conduct between members of the community. The gospel reading shows us a picture of Jesus entering the synagogue and teaching. This action, at this point in his life, was impressing to people. While at the synagogue he also cast out an unclean spirit, furthering his popularity. Pastor Doug Cullum
